UK Authorities Charge Ten in Crypto Scam Involving £300,000 Theft
UK law enforcement has charged ten individuals in a cryptocurrency scam that defrauded victims of significant sums, including one loss of £300,000. The Eastern Region Special Operations Unit (ERSOU) spearheaded the investigation, coordinating raids across Chelmsford, Enfield, South London, and Wakefield with support from multiple police divisions.
The perpetrators allegedly posed as police officers or cryptocurrency company representatives to deceive victims into surrendering their seed phrases—critical credentials for accessing crypto wallets. Once obtained, the funds were swiftly drained. Three suspects remain in custody, while seven others were released on bail, with all parties scheduled to appear at Chelmsford Crown Court on May 28.
This case underscores a troubling trend of crypto-related fraud in the UK. Last November, Thames Valley Police arrested four individuals in a separate incident involving a forced transfer of approximately $1.5 million. The recurring theme of sophisticated scams highlights the vulnerabilities in crypto security and the need for heightened vigilance among investors.
